Stephen Simmons in Bulgaria.

Fundo plans March return.

Shazhabe Ali strikes gold at first attempt.

Stephen Simmons
Stephen Simmons pulled off a stunning victory in the quarter finals in 'Strandja 2008' in Bulgaria. Stephen reached the semi finals by out pointing the Worlds No. 1, Cuban Duarte Osmay Acosta by a score of 21:16. Considering Acosta was unbeaten in almost two years this is a fantastic achievement. Stephen was not able to bring his top game in the semis where he came up against Russia's Sergey Kalchugin. Two very hard bouts in succession proved too much on the day and Stephen retired in round 2. Beating Acosta was no mean feat and Stephen has done Scotland proud.

Fundo Mhura
Leith Victoria's other Olympic hopeful; Fundo Mhura has now completed his eye treatment in London and he should be ready to box in time to enter the Scottish Championships in March. This has been a long and hard road for Fundo and all at the club wish him all the best for his come back.

Shaz EDC 2008 Injury and weight problems meant that Leith Victoria had only one boxer in this years championships. Novice Shazhabe Ali was to make his debut in the ring in the championships and he has done extremely well. Up against the more experienced, Josh Croall of Midlothian, Shazhabe traded blows in a fairly evn open round. By the Second Shazhabe was edging it. The last round was similar to the first with neither lad giving any ground. It was Shazhabe who came out the deserved winner and has made an impressive start winning gold at his first attempt.

World Boxing Championships
Saturday October 27th 2007.

Stephen Simmons opens his account with a first round stoppage.

chicago2007 Stephen Simmons started This tournament with a bang, knocking out African Games bronze medallist Senegal's Ousmane Diatta with a well delivered left hook exactly on the one minute mark. Simbo was building a clear lead being 6 points to 0 ahead when the African decided to go for it. This was a misjudgement as Stephen used his ring skills to full effect to floor his opponent. Although he rose to beat the count he was in no state to continue and the bout was stopped.

Now in the last sixteen Stephen faces Milorad Gajovic of Montenegro. This will be a tough bout. Gajovic defeated the fancied Croatian 22:12. He was a quarter finalist in 2003 where he lost by only 3 points to the eventual gold medallist Cuca's Odlanier Solis. This bout is scheduled for Tuesday Oct. 30th and victory could set up a bout with either Italy's Clemente Russo who beat England's Daniel Price 14:5 or Alexander Povernov of Germany who won Bronze at last years European championships in Plovdiv. Should Stephen progress past these bouts he will have secured both a semi final spot and a place in the Olympics in 2008.

Mixed Fortunes in Ukraine.
Friday April 20th 2007.

Stephen Simmons out on points to hometown boy, Fundo Mhura wins bronze.

Beiging2008

Fundo was first up on Tuesday boxing Galib Jahangirov of Azerbaijan. Having lost out to a controversial points decision to Rahib Baylarov in the European Championship semi final last year Fundo was determined to make a statement. That he did winning with ease.

On Wednesday it Was Stephens turn. Up against the home country's Sergey Pivovarenko, Simbo was harshly judged to be 13 - 0 down going into the last round. In spite of a spirited last round which had the Ukrainian hanging on by a thread, it was not to be and Pivovarenko went out a rather fortunate 13 - 8 winner.

Fundo progressed to the semi final by out pointing his Moldovan opponent, Igor Conobeev by 16 - 3. It was to be a tougher day at the office on Friday where Fundo, was on the wrong end of a very bad decision losing out to Gavrill Ronald of Romania. Fundo can be pleased both with his bronze medal and his performance so soon back from injury.

The tournament in Ukraine is part of the boxers warm up for the qualifying tournaments that will determine whether Leith Victoria's hopefuls continue on to Beijing in the summer of 2008. All at the club wish both boxers all the best at the first of these qualifying tournaments, the 2007 Amateur Boxing World Championships, which will now be held in Chicago, in October. A semi final spot would secure qualification for Stephen; Fundo needs to reach the quarter finals to guarantee an Olympic place.
